(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) Not far from the busy streets of Saigon, many people lived in small villages often located near a river or stream. Families were close with grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins living in the same house or in others nearby. During the Vietnam War in the late 1960s, my Army unit patrolled this area by night and day, but I preferred walking around in the daylight. Sometimes on these day patrols I even carried my camera and attempted to capture peaceful scenes of everyday village life. Although our squad was armed with all sorts of weaponry, curious children usually appeared to watch us go by. With smiling faces, laughter and out-stretched arms waving hello, I believed that we may all have a good day when I saw these ... Children On The River.
