(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) There are many statistics from the Vietnam War which are still being debated today. Over 2 million soldiers served in the Southeast Asia Theater of Operations. During that long war over 58,000 of us were killed, over 300,000 of us were wounded and over 2,000 of us are still listed as missing in action. We were sons, brothers, cousins, friends, nephews and some of us were fathers. Some were even daughters, sisters, nieces and mothers. There were also over 4,000 Military Working Dogs who served our country during that war and it is estimated they were responsible for saving over 10,000 lives. Only a very small number of our K-9 friends were permitted to come home by the time it was all over. Some were killed in action or died of diseases and the rest were euthanized or given to the South Vietnamese military which was quickly defeated. As in any war, all of those statistics have names, faces and stories. Long ago and far away, U.S. Army Scout Dog Heidi and I were young once, and ... We Were Soldiers.
