(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) As a young boy, I enjoyed camping trips with my family during summer vacations. But then the Army sent me to Vietnam soon after my 19th birthday and camping took on a whole new meaning. Our squad of 10 men would venture out into the hills, rivers and rice paddies to stay for a few days, looking for signs of where the enemy might be or had been. We would set up small temporary camps mainly for some protection from the hot sun and to get a little rest. Then we could stay awake all night. Two guys could put their ponchos together and with a couple of sticks make a fairly decent tent. With my Army Scout Dog Heidi joining us, it actually became a "Pup Tent". I can laugh now, but way back then it really wasn't my idea of having fun when I went on ... A Vietnam Camping Trip.
