Description
(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) During the late 1960s, my Army unit patrolled the rice paddies, villages and rivers not far from Saigon. Just like Forest Gump said, Life Was Like A Box Of Chocolates because we never knew what we were going to get. Even during a war, sometimes the beauty of nature was too obvious for a scared 19 year old to ignore. Like this golden sunset behind a treeline at the edge of a rice paddy. While on patrols with a squad of ten men, we all knew how many days were left on our tour of duty and we often talked about how great life would be Back In The States. So beautiful sunsets were like getting the good news first, and then the bad news second. The good news was that we had all survived another day and were one day closer to going home. The bad news was that we now had to survive ... Another Night In Vietnam.
