During that period of rapid growth and expansion, this area was considered to be The West when compared with the original 13 colonies. So as soon as 1820, people here started calling it The Queen City Of The West. Then later in 1854, the great poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow also gave it that distinction in his poem entitled " Catawba Wine ". In that poem he wrote with obvious fondness " And this song of the vine, This greeting of mine, The wind and birds deliver. To the Queen of the West, In her garlands dressed, On the bank of the beautiful river."

My love for photography began as a boy when I was taught the basics by my father. During a tour of duty with an Army Combat K9 unit in Vietnam, I bought a professional model Nikon SLR camera and dreamed of becoming an artistic photographer when I returned home. A family of my own and a new career put that dream on hold for many years, but I had always enjoyed photography as an art form. Then, after surviving another kind of war with cancer back in 1997, I began to really see the beauty in our world.
