(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) In the early 19th century slave traders stole a young boy from his mother's arms in Africa and brought him to America. While constantly dreaming of freedom this young boy taught himself to read, worked long hours and eventually bought his freedom. Somehow in 1834 he became the only African-American admitted to Cincinnati's Lane Seminary. His eloquent speeches declared the "great desire of all slaves was to obtain liberty and education". In 1988 his memory was honored for all time when Ohio Artist George Danhires created this bronze statue. City Officials of Covington, Kentucky placed it here on the southern bank of the Ohio River, the once legal and symbolic boundary between slavery and freedom. My love for photography began as a boy when I was taught the basics by my father. During a tour of duty with an Army Combat K9 unit in Vietnam, I bought a professional model Nikon SLR camera and dreamed of becoming an artistic photographer when I returned home.
