I often thought they all had to be very tall and cylindrical structures. Well that is not so on Roanoke Island between the mainland and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Short and square cottage-style structures like this were once common on the sounds and coastal waterways to aid navigation in shallow waters. The original one was built in 1877 on the Croatan Sound near Wanchese. After it was decommissioned in 1955, it fell off a barge and sunk to the bottom while being moved during rough waves.
