Artist's Description
(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) Florida still has 31 lighthouses along its coastal waters and they all have a story. This one is the second oldest lighthouse in the state and the only one with a wooden staircase. You will find it at the north side of Apalachee Bay near the St. Marks River on the Big Bend Coast. Completed in 1831 of solid brick walls, it was constantly battered by storms and hurricanes. In 1842 they had to disassemble the tower and move it farther inland to be rebuilt on safer ground. Then during the Civil War it was seriously damaged by Confederate soldiers to prevent it from being used by Union troops. This made it necessary for a complete rebuilding right after the war was over. The tower was serviced by light-keepers until it was automated in 1960. Even today, vessels sailing these waters still depend on the powerful beacon from the ... St. Marks Light.

Then, after surviving another kind of war with cancer back in 1997, I began to really see the beauty in our world. Ever since then I have been inspired with a new awareness of life and an improved photographic vision. This has compelled me to find beautiful scenes wherever I go and to share my favorite creations with others who may not have the time or...
