Description
(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) During my tour of duty in South Vietnam, squads of 10 men from my unit patrolled the villages, rice paddies and rivers not far from Saigon. We often began at sunset and returned to our base after sunrise. Our mission was to protect the people in the villages from small bands of Viet Cong who operated in the area. The VC often knew where we were and would try to avoid us. By doing so, they could terrorize the villagers while being just out of our reach. But then we would wonder all night long, if the enemy were able to cause some harm or destruction elsewhere. As the sun came up in the morning and another night patrol was over, we would walk back into the village to our pickup point. I always felt some relief and a sense of accomplishment when I walked by to see vendors and customers going about their daily lives in peace at ... The Village Market.
