Description
(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) During the late 60s my Army unit patrolled the villages, rice paddies and rivers not far from Saigon. Most of this land was flat, with a number of small and larger rivers winding their way throughout our assigned area. Sometimes we didn't have to walk everywhere and small boats like these would take us to our destination. I preferred boat rides like this one during daylight hours, and if you were in the first boat the water was often as smooth as glass. For some reason, we never even though of having life vests on or in the boat. with all that gear we had to carry, if the boat sank we would too. On calm days like this, people along the banks were just fishing or going about their daily lives. It all seemed so peaceful that sometimes I had to remind myself I was actually in the middle of a war as I cruised... Up A Lazy River.
