(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) I don't see too many of these at the end of trains anymore, but way back in the day as a small boy I saw quite a few. Especially during the summer when we were out of school and had lots of time to play in our neighborhood. Down our street at the bottom of the hill there was a train yard and several sets of tracks. Back then it was safe for kids to go exploring and have adventures on our own, so we did. Trains passing through town, or loading and unloading were always interesting to watch, plus dear old Mom encouraged my brother and I to get out of the house to go play somewhere with our friends. There was usually some mischief involved like trying to throw a rock threw an open door of a moving freight car, or placing a penny on one of the rails before a train came by to flatten it out like a pancake. My love for photography began as a boy when I was taught the basics by my father. During a tour of duty with an Army Combat K9 unit in Vietnam, I bought a professional model Nikon SLR camera and dreamed of becoming an artistic photographer when I returned home. A family of my own and a new career put that dream on hold for many years, but I had always enjoyed photography as an art form. Then, after surviving another kind of war with cancer back in 1997, I began to really see the beauty in our world. Ever since then I have been inspired with a new awareness of life and an improved photographic vision.
