(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) When traveling it is easy to learn something new every day. Take lighthouses for example. I ofen thought they all had to be very tall and cylindrical structures. Well that is not the case on Roanoke Island between the mainland and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Short and square cottage-style structures like this one were once common on the sounds and coastal waterways to aid navigation in shallow waters. The original one was built in 1877 and was located nearby on the Croatan Sound near Wanchese. After it was decommissioned in 1955, it fell off a barge and sunk to the bottom while being moved during rough waves. To preserve history and revitalize their waterfront, the citizens of Manteo built this replica in 2004. Now visitors can learn something new of days gone by, when they come to see the ... My love for photography began as a boy when I was taught the basics by my father. During a tour of duty with an Army Combat K9 unit in Vietnam, I bought a professional model Nikon SLR camera and dreamed of becoming an artistic photographer when I returned home.
