Artist's Description
(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) Throughout many areas of the southeastern United States, a flowering plant often grows on larger trees. Typically on southern live oaks like these, that I found one day in South Carolina, or on bald cypress trees. The curly strands can grow up to 25 feet in length, but are not actually attached to or dependent on the tree for nutrients. Early French explorers said it reminded them of the long gray beards of their Spaniard competitors, while native indians simply called it tree hair. The scientific name is Tillandsia Usneoides as it is a lichen that only looks like moss which did not come from Spain. But most people today still call it ... Spanish Moss.

Ever since then I have been inspired with a new awareness of life and an improved photographic vision. This has compelled me to find beautiful scenes wherever I go and to share my favorite creations with others who may not have the time or...
