Description
(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) In the early months of 1969 during the Vietnam War, U.S. Army Scout Dog Heidi was only four years old. Back then, families donated their dogs to serve our country but I never knew where she came from. Her black fur was excellent camoflage while walking point at night, but soaked up heat during the long days. The white fur areas on her chest, legs and belly were usually caked with mud. One day, our squad stopped here for a brief rest near an old family burial ground. It was close to the rice paddies where they worked in life. Although Heidi appears relaxed as I captured this photograph, she was always watching my back. Researchers say that over 4,000 dogs served in Vietnam and that they were responsible for saving over 10,000 lives. I was one of those and Scout Dog Heidi was just one of the many ... Dogs Of War.
