Description
(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) As an Army Scout Dog Handler during a tour of duty in South Vietnam, I spent a lot of time looking at my dog's ears. A black dog at the end of a five foot leash on dark nights was often difficult to see, so I was very glad that her ears were white. A sudden movement of her ears could tell me the direction of which she heard something, that I could not. Her keen sense of smell could also alert me to a distant danger or something too close for comfort. Tension or slack on the leash were also signals to pay close attention to. Sometimes small boats called Boston Whalers would take us for rides on the huge Dong Nai river, to spend the night somewhere and then pick us up the next morning. Army Scout Dog Heidi always enjoyed these boat rides and she just loved to be in the front with her ... Nose In The Air.
