Artist's Description
(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) Ocracoke Island is just one of the barrier islands that forms the Outer Banks of North Carolina. A long time ago, the infamous pirate called Blackbeard, was said to have had a house here as this island was his favorite of the area. The island is about 14 miles long, with a quaint fishing village with small shops and seafood restaurants near the southern end. It was built in 1823 on the east side of the inlet, began using electricity in the early 1900s and it was fully automated in 1955. Today National Park Service Rangers open the base to the public for tours and history lessons. The old Light keeper's house behind the trees on the right, is not open as this is where the Park Rangers live. Some say it is the 2nd oldest operating lighthouse in North Carolina and at a height of 75 feet, vessels as far out to sea as 14 miles, may still be guided by the ... Ocracoke Island Light.

Then, after surviving another kind of war with cancer back in 1997, I began to really see the beauty in our world. Ever since then I have been inspired with a new awareness of life and an improved photographic vision. This has compelled me to find beautiful scenes wherever I go and to share my favorite creations with others who may not have the time or...
